BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Junior defender Ian Svantesson of the UAB men's soccer team was named to the College Soccer News National Team of the Week, as announced on Monday. Svantesson became the first Blazer to earn such honors since Babayele Sodade in 2011.

The Orlando, Fla. native currently leads the team in scoring with four points on the year. Svantesson tallied a goal in each of the Green and Gold's first two matches. The junior defender scored the final goal in the season opener against Memphis on Friday, Aug. 29, and then registered the game-winning goal at Mercer.

Through two matches, Svantesson has already matched the most goals he has scored in a single season during his collegiate career. He has six goals in his UAB career in 40 matches played.

On the other end of the pitch, Svantesson has been one of the anchors of the Blazers' backline. Through two matches, UAB has only conceded two goals, with only one coming in the run of play.

The UAB men's soccer team is back in action on Friday, Sept. 5 at the Hurricane Classic in Tulsa, Okla. The Blazers will take on Cal State Northridge at 5 p.m. CT.
