BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The UAB men's soccer team will open the 2009 regular season when it takes on the Oakland Grizzlies on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. at West Campus Field. The contest will mark the first time the two teams will meet on the pitch in series history.
The Grizzlies are coming off a 14-4-2 season in 2008, highlighted by capturing the Summit League Championship and making the program's 18th appearance in the NCAA Tournament. Oakland welcomes back three starters and 11 letterwinners off last year's championship team.
During the preseason, the Grizzlies sported a 2-1 overall record. Oakland captured victories over Xavier (3-1) and Western Michigan (1-0), before falling to Loyola-Chicago, 4-1, in the 2009 Soccer Festival last weekend.
The Blazers enter Tuesday's contest after closing the preseason with a 2-0 record. UAB won its exhibition contests over Clemson (3-0) and Belmont (3-1) by a combined total of 6-1.
Sophomore forward Babayele Sodade and freshman midfielder Reed Matte led the Blazers with each scoring a pair of goals in exhibition action, while senior Two-Boys Gumede tallied a goal and an assist over the two-game span.
Tuesday's match is free to UAB students who have a valid student ID. The first 100 students through the gate will receive a UAB Soccer Hooligan t-shirt. Additionally, students and UAB men's soccer season ticket holders are encouraged to come and enjoy free food and drinks at a pregame tailgate that will begin 60 minutes before the game (6 p.m.).
Additionally, any fan who brings at least two non-perishable food items will receive a $1 admission ticket to the contest.
