BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- UAB senior goalkeeper Carl Woszczynski was selected as the Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week, the league office announced on Monday. It is the first defensive player of the week awarded by the conference in 2011 and the fifth time in Woszczynski's career that he has claimed the honor.

"I thought Carl had a very good game and is definitely deserving of this honor," UAB head coach Mike Getman said. "He made some key saves and really just gave us great leadership out of the back."

Woszczynski, a native of Columbus, Ind., played splendidly in the net to help lift the UAB men's soccer team to an impressive 2-1 season-opening victory over Clemson last Saturday. The game was played in front of 3,141 fans, which set a new school record for the largest regular-season crowd to ever see a game at West Campus Field.

Woszczynski was a nuisance all night for the Clemson offense. He faced a total of nine shots (four on goal) and made three saves, all of which were diving stops, en route to the victory. He also was a constant presence on numerous crosses and balls that were served towards the goal.

The last time Woszczynski, a two-time all-conference selection, was honored with the league's weekly award came during the 2009 season. That year, he captured the accolade on three separate occasions, which is the most POW awards won by a UAB player in a season in school history. He won his first weekly award in 2008.

Two weeks ago, Woszczynski was announced as one of 30 men's soccer candidates from around the country, and one of five goalkeepers, for the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence - community, classroom, character and competition.

Woszczynski and the Blazers will return to action on Thursday when they travel to Macon, Ga. to take on Mercer. Kickoff is slated for 5 p.m. CT. UAB will return to West Campus Field on Sunday, Sept. 4, when it hosts the UIC Flames at 7 p.m. CT.
