BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB men's soccer received votes in the Preseason NSCAA/Continental Tire NCAA Division I Men's Soccer National Poll, the NSCAA announced on Wednesday. UAB received 20 votes in the preseason poll, the third-most among those not ranked in the top 25.

The 2013 national champion -- Notre Dame -- was named the top ranked team in the land in the preseason coaches' poll. Maryland, Virginia, UCLA, and Conference USA-foe New Mexico wrapped up the top five, respectively.

The expectations are high for the 2014 UAB men's soccer team. UAB returns its top-three scorers from last season when it led the nation in scoring. Four members of the 2014 squad were named to the Preseason All-Conference USA Team and junior forward Freddy Ruiz was named the Preseason C-USA Offensive Player of the Year.

Despite returning a plethora of talent and experience, the squad will be challenged week in and week out. Seven of UAB's 17 opponents this season were ranked in the preseason coaches' poll, including No. 3 Virginia, No. 5 New Mexico, and No. 13 Akron.

The UAB men's soccer team will kick off the 2014 season against Memphis on Friday, Aug. 29. The match is slated to begin at 7:00 p.m. at West Campus Field.
