BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB men’s soccer team is nearly one month away from the start of the 2014 season. The squad has not officially reported to campus yet, but several members of the team have been preparing for the upcoming campaign in the USL Premier Development League (PDL) and for their national sides.
Redshirt senior midfielder Alex Clay, senior defender Darion Copeland, and junior forward Freddy Ruiz all have played for the Ocala Stampede this summer in the PDL. Clay joined the squad this weekend for the PDL Playoffs in Austin, Texas. Copeland has two goals in six matches played for Ocala, while Ruiz has registered five points (two goals, one assist) in nine contests.
Down the road from Ocala, Fla., junior defender Ian Svantesson has played for the Orlando City U23 team. Svantesson has played in nine matches for the PDL team, scoring one goal.
Sophomore defender Lars Willemse was a member of the PDL’s Houston Dutch Lions. Willemse played in all but five of Houston’s matches during the summer season.
Redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Joe Kuzminsky and sophomore forward Rami Dajani were the final two Blazers in the PDL for the summer of 2014. Kuzminsky was a member of the Real Colorado Foxes, while Dajani played for his hometown Chicago Inferno.
Sophomore midfielder William White has kept busy this summer with the Bermuda U20 national team. Most recently, White and the Bermudan national team played in the 2014 National Training Center Tournament at the U.S. Soccer National Training Center in Carson, Calif. from July 14-18. White and the Bermudan U20 national team played Australia, the United States, and Chile in a round-robin style tournament.
Freshman midfielder David Valverde was invited to train with the Costa Rica U20 national team this summer. The squad is preparing for the 2015 FIFA U20 World Cup, which be played in New Zealand next summer.
The UAB men’s soccer team opens the 2014 season on Friday, Aug. 29 against Memphis. The match is scheduled to kickoff at 7 p.m. at West Campus Field.
