BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- Nine home matches, including a contest against defending NCAA champion Indiana on Sept. 6, highlight the 2013 UAB men's soccer schedule, Blazers' head coach Mike Getman announced on Wednesday.
The Blazers will go against seven teams that participated in the 2012 NCAA Soccer Championship and will face five squads that finished ranked in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Top 25 in 2012 (No. 1 Indiana, No. 10 New Mexico, No. 14 Tulsa, No. 23 Charlotte and No. 25 VCU).
"Last year, we had the ninth most-difficult schedule in the country and this season will be even tougher," Getman said. "We expect the challenges we will face all season to prepare us for postseason play."
The Blazers, who have made seven appearances in the NCAA Tournament, including six trips in the last 14 years, open the 2013 slate with three exhibition contests. The first is scheduled for Aug. 20 against Auburn Montgomery, before UAB faces Montevallo on Aug. 22 and Jacksonville on Aug. 24 -- all slated to start at 7 p.m. CT.
UAB then opens regular season play at the VCU Classic in Richmond, Va., where the Blazers will play VCU and High Point on Aug. 30 and Sept. 1, before returning home to face defending national champion Indiana on Sept. 6 at 7:30 p.m. CT.
"Any time you play the defending national champion it is a big match," Getman said. "Our players and fans will be excited to have the Hoosiers back in Birmingham."
The Blazers host the 16th annual UAB Soccer For A Cure Classic on Sept. 13 and 15. Charlotte, Memphis and East Tennessee State, along with UAB, will particiapte in this year's event at West Campus Field.
Getman's team then stays at home for a game against Mercer on Sept. 21 at 7 p.m. CT and a contest against Belmont at 7 p.m. CT on Sept. 25.
The 2013 Conference USA slate will feature nine matches as the league adds four new teams (Charlotte, Florida Atlantic, Old Dominion and affiliate member New Mexico) for the upcoming year. Charlotte was the NCAA runner-up in 2011, while ODU and New Mexico were both participants in the 2012 NCAA Tournament.
