UAB,s men,s soccer team will host the professional team Atlanta
Silverbacks, Thursday at 6 p.m. at West Campus Field. Admission is free.
The Silverbacks are the first professional team to play at UAB. They are
a member of the A-League, which just one step away from the Major League
Soccer teams. Three members of last year's Blazers, midfielder Roberto
Najarro, defender Rumbani Munthali and goalkeeper David Clemente were
drafted by A-League teams.
,,I think it says a lot for where our program is when a professional team
comes here to play, °/°° UAB head coach Mike Getman said. ,,Atlanta is
preparing for its season and thinks enough of the competition we will
provide to come play us. We have now hosted professional soccer and the
U.S. National Team. °/°°
This game comes after the Blazers defeated Alabama-Huntsville 2-0 this
past Saturday night. Jose Rayo scored both the Blazers, goals in the
second half. The Blazers are going through spring practice in
preparation for the 2001 fall season. UAB was 14-5-2 and ranked 19th in
the final poll this past season.
Last year UAB hosted the U.S. National team at West Campus Field.
