BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB men’s soccer team will be back on the pitch this spring at seven different events. Memphis and the NASL’s Atlanta Silverbacks highlight the 2014 spring schedule.

“We return a lot of key players from last season, so we needed a schedule that would challenge them to be even better,” head coach Mike Getman stated. “I have no doubt this schedule will help us get better.”

The Blazers open the season by hosting Montevallo and Memphis on Saturday, Feb. 22 at West Campus Field. UAB takes on Montevallo at 11 a.m. The two visiting teams will then clash at 1 p.m. The day will be concluded by the old Conference USA rivalry of UAB-Memphis at 3 p.m.

Next, UAB heads to the Georgia State Invitational in Atlanta, Ga. The Green and Gold will face Georgia State and Wofford on Saturday, March 8.

UAB will host Winstar Academy at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, March 11, before playing host to its 7 vs. 7 Tournament on Saturday, March 15.

On Friday, March 21, the Blazers will host the Atlanta Silverbacks of the NASL. Atlanta plays in the second tier of professional soccer in the United States. In 2013, the Silverbacks advanced to the NASL Soccer Bowl, the league’s annual championship match. American soccer great Eric Wynalda is the current head coach of the Atlanta Silverbacks.

“The highlight of the spring will be our match with the Atlanta Silverbacks,” added Getman. “To play against a professional team at home is very unusual. Bringing professional soccer to Birmingham is very exciting. I appreciate the work the Birmingham Hammers have done to help make this event possible.”

“The Silverbacks are coached by Eric Wynalda,” said Getman. “He is a Hall of Fame player, who is also a television personality. Having Eric in town will bring a spotlight to our town and sport.”

On Saturday, April 5, UAB will take part in the Lipscomb Tournament in Nashville, Tenn. The squad will face Lindsey Wilson and Lipscomb in the event.

UAB will conclude spring play with its annual Alumni Game. The game will be played on Saturday, April 12 at West Campus Field.
