NORFOLK, Va. -
The No. 10 UAB men's soccer team (8-2-1, 2-1-1) suffered its second defeat of 2013 at the hands of Conference USA foe Old Dominion (6-3-1, 3-1-0), 3-2 in overtime, on Saturday night. The loss snaps UAB's five-match winning streak, its longest of the year.

"I thought we did well enough to win the match, but I thought Old Dominion worked really hard and played well," head coach Mike Getman said. "I thought late in the game, they were desperate launching a lot of balls forward. It was a wet field, things happen. Give them credit for battling hard and I thought they played very well for 90 minutes. Sometimes, that's just soccer. At the end of the day, they were able to get it done."

For the fifth straight match, UAB tallied a goal in the opening 20 minutes. Sophomore forward Freddy Ruiz tallied his ninth goal of the year 31 seconds into the match, giving the visiting Blazers an early 1-0 lead. Junior forward Diego Navarrete collected an assist on the play, his sixth of 2013.

"This team has done a good job all year long of coming out sharp and ready to play," Getman stated. "You usually don't expect to score 30 seconds in. It was a really good goal. We played well, created a nice chance, and finished it."

The Blazers defense kept the host Monarchs in check for nearly the entire opening half. Senior goalkeeper Raphael Ville registered two saves in the first 45 minutes.

Old Dominion was able to break through in the 39th minute. Senior forward Gideon Asante fired a shot towards the lower right corner of the UAB goal. Ville appeared to come up with the initial save, but could not collect the ball and Old Dominion knotted the match at 1-1.

UAB quickly responded in the 44th minute. Redshirt senior midfielder Patrick Huang lined up a free kick from 40 yards out. Huang bent the kick into the top right corner of the goal, giving the Blazers a 2-1 lead into halftime.

The Blazers' defense preserved the one-goal advantage for the majority of the second stanza. Ville came up with three saves in the final 45 minutes of regulation to keep the host-Monarchs off the board.

In the 89th minute, sophomore defender Michael Nelson collected a shot off the post and slotted it into the UAB goal, tying the match at 2-2. Tied after 90 minutes of play, the match would go into overtime.

At the 93:08 mark, senior forward Tim Hopkinson headed in a pass to score the game-winning goal, securing the victory for the host-Monarchs.

"Again, on a wet day with the rain and the wind, sometimes things just happen," Getman concluded. "I thought we played well, fought hard, and played pretty smart most of the match. When two good teams face off, sometimes things happen."
