BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- The UAB men's soccer team collected its third straight shutout, defeating crosstown foe Birmingham-Southern, 3-0, on Friday night in the opening round of the 10th annual UAB Classic. The Blazers will take on Mercer for the 2007 UAB Classic championship, as the Bears defeated Alabama A&M, 2-1, in the opening match of the evening.

"I am happy with this win," UAB head coach Mike Getman said. "I thought we played really well in the second half. This has been a great rivalry with Birmingham-Southern. I am pleased with our effort and I thought we scored some really nice goals tonight."

Three different Blazers scored goals on the evening, while freshman Michal Mravec, making his first career start, led UAB with two assists on the night.

The Blazers opened the scoring in the first half when junior forward Frank Brown scored his team-leading third goal of the season at the 27:18 mark. Freshman Michal Mravec served the ball into the 18-yard box directory to junior Trey Gregory. The Birmingham, Ala. native then flicked the ball onto the feet of Brown, who finished it in the back of the net for the one-goal advantage.

Following intermission, UAB wasted no time extending its lead to two goals, when junior Dejan Jakovic tallied his third goal of the season just 39 seconds into the second half. The MAC Hermann Trophy and All-America candidate received a pass from junior midfielder Carlo Schiavoni, beat the BSC goalkeeper and deposited a shot into an empty net.

"I thought Dejan was the man tonight, especially in the second half" Getman said. "I felt he showed the caliber of player he can be and did what he wanted to do out on the field."

Junior midfielder Derek Rios sealed the UAB win with a goal at the 89:02 mark to result in the final score. The Blazers outshot the Panthers, 14-4, and had a 7-2 shots on goal advantage.

Meanwhile, sophomore goalkeeper Wes Johnson, who captured Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week honors last week, record his second shutout and extended his shutout streak to 234 minutes.

The Blazers will take on Mercer for the 2007 UAB Classic title on Sunday, Sept. 16, at 2:30 p.m. at West Campus Field. Alabama A&M and Birmingham-Southern will play prior to the championship match at noon.
