UAB Men's Golf Team Set To Compete at Jerry Pate National

Senior Jason Shufflebotham, who captured the medalist honor at the Sam Hall Intercollegiate last month, will lead UAB at the Jerry Pate this week.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB men's golf team, ranked No. 8 in the most recent top 25, will have a good test this week as it participates in the annual Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate on Monday and Tuesday. The event, which will be held at the Old Overton Golf and Country Club, is free to the general public.

The Jerry Pate is annually one of the top events in the fall season in men's college golf. Along with the Blazers, this year's field includes tournament host and third-ranked Alabama, No. 5 Texas, No. 7 Florida, No. 9 Auburn and No. 16 Clemson. Also competing at the event is Arizona, Louisville, Mississippi State, Middle Tennessee State, Samford, SMU and UNLV.

UAB has had early season success in its two events this season. The Blazers opened the 2011-12 campaign by capturing the Sam Hall Intercollegiate in Hattiesburg, Miss. with a team total of 16-under par 836. The following weekend, UAB placed second overall at the Saint Mary's Intercollegiate in Monterey, Calif.

The same five golfers who played at the Saint Mary's Intercollegiate will represent UAB this week in Jason Shufflebotham, Thomas Sutton, Hunter Hawkins, Paul Dunne and Sam Love.

The event will be played on the par-70, 7,204-yard course with two rounds on Monday with the final 18 holes on Tuesday morning.

The Jerry Pate Intercollegiate began back in 1986 and is named for the most successful professional golfer in Crimson Tide history. Pate currently plays on the Champions Tour and is active in the team selection for the tournament.

The Crimson Tide have won the event four of the last five years, with Auburn claiming the team title in 2010.
