BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Following a first-place finish and a second-place result in its two tournaments this season, the UAB men's golf team is ranked No. 8 in the nation in the first Golfstat.com rankings which were released on Wednesday.
The Blazers opened the 2011-12 campaign by capturing the Sam Hall Intercollegiate in Hattiesburg, Miss. with a team total of 16-under par 836. The following weekend, UAB placed second overall at the Saint Mary's Intercollegiate in Monterey, Calif.
On the strength of the two results, the Blazers have a rating of 86.659% in the Golfstat ranking. Golfstat takes into account numerous statistical data and ranks teams based on potential head-to-head competition.
"It's certainly a great feeling to be ranked No. 8 in the country," UAB head coach Alan Kaufman said. "There is no doubt we have had a terrific start to the season, but it is a long season with the national championship not being played until May. We played well in a couple of tournaments so far, but need to continue to work hard and get better."
UAB is one of three Conference USA squads to be ranked in the initial top-25, joining UCF (No. 6) and Tulsa (No. 25).
The Blazers will next compete on Oct. 3-4 when they participate at the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate. The two-day event, which will be held at the Old Overton Course in Birmingham, traditionally includes some of the top men's golf teams in the country. Admission is free to the general public.
