BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – UAB rising redshirt senior Thomas Sutton took home the Alabama Match Play Championship at the Moore’s Club in Auburn, Ala. on Saturday. Sutton defeated fellow Blazer Sam Love in the Match Play Championship final, 4 & 3.
The Montgomery native stormed out to an early four-stroke advantage in the final match behind consecutive birdies on the third, fourth, fifth, and sixth holes. Love birdied two holes over the next six, but could not keep up with the red-hot Sutton. Sutton tallied a birdie on the par-5, 13th hole, then sealed the victory with a par on the 15th hole after Love scored a bogey.
Sutton’s victory at the Moore’s Club adds to the collection of accolades by UAB golfers this summer. Rising junior Paul Dunne captured the East of Ireland Amateur Open Championship in June. Senior Wilson McDonald will be playing the U.S. Amateur Championship this upcoming week and Love lost in a playoff at the Southern Amateur in July.
