BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB men’s golf team released its schedule for the upcoming 2014-15 campaign, head coach Alan Murray announced on Tuesday. UAB will participate in 10 events during the regular season, followed by postseason competition in 2015.
“The schedule is obviously really important,” stated Murray. “We try to play the most competitive schedule and play the best golf courses we can.”
The Blazers will open the fall season at the Gopher Invitational in Independence, Minn. from Sept. 7-8. UAB will then head to the Inverness Intercollegiate in Toledo, Ohio from Sept. 22-23.
“I played college golf at Toledo,” added Murray. “Maybe I am being biased from going there, but the golf course has hosted the U.S. Open and PGA Championship. Any time we get the opportunity to play on a golf course that has been the site of the U.S. Open and PGA Championship, we are going to take it.”
Following its trips up north, UAB will host the Shoal Creek Intercollegiate hosted by Graeme McDowell. The two-day tournament will be played at the Shoal Creek Golf Club from Sept. 29-30.
The very next week, the Green and Gold will play in the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate, right down the road at the Old Overton Country Club in Vestavia Hills, Ala.
UAB closes the fall with a trip to the Sagamore Preview in Noblesville, Ind. from Oct. 13-14. The Sagamore Club is one of six sites that will host 2015 NCAA regional competitions.
For the fourth straight season, UAB will begin spring play with the Gator Invitational, John Hayt Collegiate Invitational, and Chris Schenkel Invitational.
“The spring, we do our regulars,” commented Murray. “We open at the Gator, Hayt, and Schenkel. We know those golf courses. Hopefully, that will be an advantage.”
Following their first three tournaments of the spring season, the Blazers will go out west for The Goodwin in Palo Alto, Calif. Stanford’s home event will run from March 26-28.
“It’s a great event,” said Murray. “We played there this past year. It is an excellent field, terrific golf course. Everyone loves going to California in this program.”
The team will close regular season play with the Old Waverly Collegiate Championship in West Point, Miss. from April 6-7.
UAB will open postseason play with the Conference USA Championships in April. Following the conference championships, the squad will look to earn a bid to its 11th NCAA regional in program history in May. The top teams from regional competition will advance to the 2015 NCAA Championships in Bradenton, Fla. at the end of May.
