BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - UAB men's golfer Thomas Sutton advanced to the quarterfinals of match play at the 112th North & South Boys Amateur Championship, before falling to David Erdy, 4 and 3.

Playing at the Pinehurst No. 2 course, Sutton, the No. 15 seed, opened match play with an upset of No. 2 seeded Michael Cromie of the University of Georgia, 4 and 2, on Friday morning. The Montgomery, Ala. native then lost to Erdy, a senior at Indiana University who was the seventh seed, during the afternoon round.

Erdy joins top-seeded Peter Williamson of Dartmouth, fourth-seeded Matt Ewald of Washburn (Ky.) College and Clemson's Thomas Bradshaw, the No. 6 seed as the semifinalists in this year's event.

The North and South is the longest consecutive-running amateur golf championship in the United States today.
