POINT CLEAR, Ala. – Rising junior Will Cannon of the UAB men’s golf team won the 98th Alabama State Amateur Championship on Sunday afternoon at the Lakewood Golf Club’s Dogwood Course. Cannon recorded a 280 (-8) for the four-round event to take home individual medalist honors.
The Hoover, Ala. native was two back of Auburn rising redshirt junior Ryan Benton heading into the final four holes of play. Cannon recorded a par on each of the final four holes, as Benton registered three bogeys to record the win.
“This is a huge honor,” Cannon said in a release from the Alabama Golf Association. “It’s one of the very best tournaments I play and was at a great venue. I am proud to have done it and could not have done it without the help of my Dad, my swing coach Eric Eshelman, and my UAB golf coach Alan Murray.”
Cannon’s victory in the Alabama State Amateur Championship is just one of the many accomplishments that the members of the UAB men’s golf team have earned this summer. Earlier in the summer, rising senior Paul Dunne earned reserve medalist honors at the East of Ireland Championship. In addition, former Blazer Sam Love earned an invite to the 2014 U.S. Open Championship in Pinehurst, N.C.
