BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Senior Wilson McDonald and junior Paul Dunne of the UAB men’s golf team each were named to the Division I PING All-Southeast Region Team, as announced by the Golf Coaches Association of America on Thursday. McDonald and Dunne became the fourth and fifth Blazer in program history to earn All-Southeast Region accolades.
It marks the first time since 2007-08 that a member of UAB men’s golf team had earned such honors. In addition, it was the second time that two Blazers had been recognized on the All-Southeast Region Team.
McDonald, a first-team All-Conference USA honoree, has been one of the Blazers’ top players in 2013-14. The senior owns a 72.0 stroke average headed into the 2014 NCAA Championships. He leads the squad in tournaments at or under par (5) and is second on the team in top-10 finishes (5). The Mobile, Ala. native won the 2013 Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate after firing a 202 (-8) for the three-round event.
This honor is another accolade added to the list Dunne has put together in this season. Earlier this year, Dunne was named to the All-Conference USA First Team, 2014 Conference USA Golfer of the Year, and 2014 Palmer Cup European Team. The junior leads the squad in stroke average (71.7), rounds at or under par (19), wins (2), top-five finishes (5), top-10 finishes (6), and top-20 finishes (9). The Greystones, Ireland native has placed in the top 10 in five of the team’s last six events.
UAB opens play at the 2014 NCAA Championships in Hutchinson, Kan. on Friday afternoon. The Blazers will begin play at 1:30 p.m. CT at the Prairie Dunes Country Club.
