Senior Wilson McDonald and the UAB men's golf team looks to qualify for its fifth appearance at the national championships.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The No. 21 UAB men’s golf team is headed to the 2014 NCAA Regionals, as announced on the Golf Channel on Monday. This marks the third consecutive season UAB will participate in regional competition, matching its longest stretch in program history.
“It is going to be an intense and exciting three days of competition,” head coach Alan Murray said. “We certainly have the talent to get through, we just have to perform.”
UAB was awarded the No. 4 seed in the Sugar Grove, Ill. Regional, which will take place May 15-17 at Rich Harvest Farms. Hosted by Northern Illinois, the top-five teams in the 14-team field will advance to the NCAA Championships in Hutchinson, Kan.
“Just looking at it on paper, I think the boys are excited that we are going to a course where it is going to be bent-grass,” added Murray. “None of us have played the golf course or are too familiar with it. It’s got a great reputation.”
The Sugar Grove Regional presents a strong challenge for the Blazers. No. 1 seed California was a 2013 national semifinalist, while No. 2 seed Illinois was the 2013 national runner-up.
“No matter where we got sent, the same thing applies; we have to play well if we want to make it out,” commented Murray.
In total, 81 teams were selected for NCAA regional competition. The top-five teams from each of the six regional sites will participate in the NCAA Championships at Prairie Dunes Country Club from May 23-28.
UAB is looking to make its fifth appearance at the national championships, with its last coming in 2012.
