BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Redshirt senior Thomas Sutton and junior Paul Dunne of the UAB men’s golf team were selected to the 2014 Conference USA All-Academic Team, conference officials announced on Thursday. UAB was the only school to have two players be named to the 2014 Conference USA All-Academic Team.
In his final season on campus, Sutton has been a steady presence for the 2013-14 UAB men’s golf team. The redshirt senior owns a 72.6 stroke average for the year, his lowest single-season average of his collegiate career. He has finished in top 10 three times this season, taking runner-up accolades at the Samford Intercollegiate.
Off the links, Sutton has excelled academically. The business administration graduate student has a 4.00 cumulative GPA. The Montgomery, Ala. native graduated in the fall of 2013 with a degree in accounting. He is a five-time member of the Conference USA Commissioner’s Honor Roll and is a two-time All-Academic Team honoree.
Dunne has been the Blazers’ best player statistically in 2013-14. The junior owns a team-best 71.5 stroke average and has recorded 16 rounds at or under for the year. The Greystones, Ireland native has won two individual titles and finished in the top five in four events this season, with three of those coming in the past four tournaments. For his efforts on the course, Dunne was named to the 2014 Palmer Cup as a member of the European squad.
In the classroom, Dunne is a standout, as well. The business finance major owns a 3.83 cumulative GPA. He is a three-time Conference USA Commissioner’s Honor Roll honoree and has received the Conference USA Academic Medal twice in his career.
Sutton and Dunne lead the UAB men’s golf team into the postseason beginning on Sunday, April 27 at the Conference USA Championships. The three-day event will be held in Edmond, Okla.
