BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Junior Paul Dunne of the UAB men’s golf team has been selected to participate in the 2014 Palmer Cup, the Golf Coaches Association of America announced on Thursday morning on Golf Channel’s Morning Drive. The annual Ryder Cup-style competition will be played June 26-28 in Surrey, England.
Dunne was one of 10 collegiate players selected to represent the European team. The Greystones, Ireland native was one of two players on the European squad to be selected by the committee.
“I am absolutely thrilled and delighted for Paul,” head coach Alan Murray stated. “He has had a great year. He has won twice this season, which is a fantastic achievement.”
The junior golfer becomes the third player in UAB men’s golf history to be selected to the Palmer Cup, joining Andrew Laurence (1997) and Graeme McDowell (2000, 2001). All three members of the UAB men’s golf team selected to play in the event have been apart of the European team.
“It is great for the program,” said Murray. “We always have great international players. It gives a little more exposure to the program. We have got good kids and when things like this happen I am not surprised.”
A three-time Conference USA Golfer of the Week in 2013-14, Dunne is UAB’s top player statistically for this season. Dunne owns a team-low 71.5 stroke average and leads the team with 16 rounds at or under par. In addition, Dunne has won two tournament and finished in the top five four times, which both lead the Blazers. The junior has placed in the top five of three of the past four events, as well.
“He is a really consistent and solid performer for us,” added Murray. “He is a very experienced golfer and knowing him, he will be excited to represent his team.”
The competition will be played at the Walton Heath Golf Club. Established in 1997, the Palmer Cup is an annual international collegiate event pitting the top 10 collegiate players in the United States and Europe.
