BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The UAB men's golf team placed fourth at the 2012 Shoal Creek Intercollegiate Hosted By Graeme McDowell, which finished play on Tuesday afternoon. The Blazers closed the two-day, 54-hole event with a total of 12-over par 876 (292-285-299).
"We were pleased to host this tournament and had a great turnout for both days," UAB head coach Alan Kaufman said. "We didn't have a good last nine holes, but were right there down the stretch. I was pleased with the entire tournament and how things ran. Hopefully we will learn from our mistakes and play better at the David Toms Intercollegiate (Oct. 6-7)."
LSU took the team title with an even par team score of 864, capturing the crown by five strokes over Houston (869). The Tigers' total ties for the second-best team score in the event's history. North Texas finished third with a nine-over par 876, while UAB and Memphis (877) rounded out the top five.
Former Blazer Graeme McDowell served as honorary host of this year's event, which was something that all players, coaches and fans involved really enjoyed, according to Kaufman.
"Graeme being involved and around this year's tournament was certainly the highlight," Kaufman said. "He spoke with all teams on Sunday night at the banquet and was around for Monday morning before he had to go to Chicago (to join European teammates for this weekend's Ryder Cup). We certainly appreciate his involvement in making this a very successful tournament."
Junior Sam Love led the Blazers as he finished in a tie for 11th place overall with a three-round total of one-over par 217 (70-70-77).
"I didn't hit the ball well all week, but I was able to hang in there thanks to my chipping and putting," Love said. "It finally caught up to me today, so that's a little disappointing."
UAB sophomore Paul Dunne finished in a tie for 16th with a total of 218 (74-71-73), while freshman Martin Rower carded a four-over par 220 (73-72-75) and placed 18th overall. Junior Thomas Sutton carded an eight-over par 224 (75-72-77) and senior Hunter Hawkins finished in a tie for 36th place with a total of 227 (76-77-74).
Three Blazers competed as individuals in the tournament. Junior Conner Pratt carded an eight-over par 224 (77-72-75) for a tie for 25th place, while junior Wilson McDonald finished a stroke behind with a total of 225 (74-73-78). Freshman Ryan Davies rounded out the UAB individuals with a three-round total of 232 (80-76-76).
North Texas' Rodolfo Cazaubon and LSU's Stewart Jolly and Curtis Thompson tied tournament record for 54 holes, each carding a six-under par 210 on the par-72, 7234-yard Shoal Creek Country Club course.
The Blazers will next be in action on Oct. 6-7 when they compete at the David Toms Intercollegiate, hosted by LSU.
