TEXARKANA, Ark. – The UAB men’s golf team is tied for eighth place after round one of the Conference USA Men’s Golf Championship. Paul Dunne led the way for the Blazers with an even par 72 in round one to end the day in a tie for 14th.
Dunne struggled out of the gate for the Blazers, making a double and three bogeys in his first six holes, but played his last 12 holes at five-under par to finish with an even par round of 72. Sitting at five over par, Dunne eagled the par five, seventh hole and then made five birdies on the back nine to get back to even par.
Thomas Sutton got off to a good start to the tournament with a birdie on the par-five second hole en route to an even par opening nine holes. He got his score back to one-under par with a birdie on the par-four tenth before a double-bogey six on the 14th hole pushed him to one-over par. He concluded the back nine with a birdie and a bogey to finish with a one-over par 73.
After round one, UAB sits in eighth place with a team score of 296 (+8). SMU leads the team standings with a first round score of 278 (-10). UCF and Houston round out the top three with scores of 285 (-3) and 286 (-2), respectively.
The championship will resume with 18 holes on Monday with play beginning at 8 a.m. CT. Live scoring is available at golfstat.com.
