COLUMBUS, Ohio – In its final regular season event of the 2013-14 season, the No. 18 UAB men’s golf team finished in second place at the Robert Kepler Intercollegiate on Sunday. UAB finished the three-round event in 876 strokes (+24), 18 strokes behind No. 5 Georgia Tech.
“Second was as good as we could have hoped for with all things considered today,” head coach Alan Murray said. “Conditions were extremely tough with high winds and very tricky greens. That was the best we have been all season at being disciplined, staying in control of our emotions, and being very positive. If we keep that up for the rest of the year, we have enough talent to be very successful.”
Junior Paul Dunne was the Blazer’s lowest scorer for the three-round tournament at the Scarlet Course at The Ohio State University. After an even-par final round, Dunne finished in 216 strokes (+3) and tied for fifth place. It marked his fourth top-five finish of the year and third in the past four events.
“Paul had another great tournament,” added Murray. “He is leading by example.”
Senior Sam Love finished one stroke behind Dunne and placed 10th at the par-71, 7,455-yard course. Love has finished in the top 10 in three events this season.
Sophomore Martin Rohwer recorded a 219 (+6) in Columbus, Ohio. The sophomore placed 14th, for his sixth top-20 finish of the 2013-14 campaign.
Seniors Thomas Sutton and Wilson McDonald completed the UAB lineup. Sutton was 12-over par for the event, while McDonald finished in 234 strokes (+18).
“Our other guys are really close to playing some good golf,” stated Murray. “It is very exciting as we head into postseason play. This event was really good preparation for conference, regionals, and finals, I believe.”
With the conclusion of the regular season, UAB will head to the Conference USA Championship. The conference championship will be held from April 27-29 in Edmund, Okla.
