STATESBORO, Ga. – In a field that featured two teams ranked nationally in the top-5, junior R.J. Keur tied for second place overall at the Schenkel Invitational by shooting a ten under par to lead the UAB men’s golf team at Forest Heights Country Club.
Keur opened the tournament with a two under 70 on Friday, and followed that up with consecutive four under 68s, including Sunday’s final round which helped him tie for second.
This is Keur’s second straight second place finish and his third consecutive top-15 finish. He was second at the Colleton River Intercollegiate two weeks ago, and tied for 14th at The Hayt three weeks ago.
“R.J. was very impressive all weekend,” head coach Mike Wilson said. “He made a great run in the final round at the leaders and second place in this field is a great effort.
“We were close as a team to having a really solid tournament. We just need to eliminate the big numbers in order to compete to win.”
As a team, UAB tied for eighth overall with Lipscomb at +4. Taylor Eyster was the Blazers’ second finisher as he shot a -1 for the tournament and placed 23rd overall. Tim Harry (+7) tied 46th, while William Walker (+8) tied for 50th Murray Naysmith (+21) tied for 77th.
No. 4 Florida won the tournament at 18 under par, while Georgia Southern (-16) and No. 1 Vanderbilt (-15) took home second and third. Individually, Patrick Martin of Vandy finished two shots ahead of Keur (-12) to take home top honors.
The Blazers continue action on April 1-2 at the 3M Augusta Invitational in Augusta, Ga.
