STATESBORO, Ga. ----- The UAB men's golf team improved three spots, from 12th place to a tie for ninth, with a final round 294 at the Schenkel Invitational on Sunday.
Thomas Sutton led the way for the Blazers with his second one-under par 71 round of the tournament. He finished with a total of 216, which was good to tie for 11th place individually.
Paul Dunne and Hunter Hawkins also contributed solid rounds to the team score with rounds of 72 and 73, respectively. Martin Rohwer, 78, and Wilson McDonald, 79, rounded out the scoring for the Blazers.
Sam Love, who was playing as an individual, shot a three-over par 75 to finish in a tie for 14th place at 217. Love's second round, 66, was the lowest round of the tournament this year.
"It was a tough tournament. There were nine teams in the field that were in the top-50," said UAB head coach Alan Kaufman. "Thomas played really well and Sam played great as an individual."
Alabama won the event for a second consecutive year with a team total of 848 (-16). Texas finished in second with a score of 858 and North Florida rounded out the top three at 868.
The Crimson Tide's Justin Thomas took home medalist honors with a three round total of nine-under par 207. Texas' Brandon Stone finished three back at 210, while two golfers tied for third at 211.
"We hit the ball as good as we have all season but struggled to make putts," added Kaufman. "We are know in the position that we need to do well in the next three tournaments in order to make regionals."
The UAB men's golf team will return to action on March 25-26 when it travels to Eugene, Ore. to compete in the Duck Invitational.
