STATESBORO, Ga. – The No. 14 UAB men’s golf team finished in second place at the Chris Schenkel Invitational on Sunday. As a team, the Blazers recorded an 858 (-6) for the three-round event at the Forest Heights Country Club.
“The weather was brutal today,” head coach Alan Murray said. “We were lucky to get everything in. The heavens really opened up for the last six holes. The conditions were difficult, but the guys did well.”
Tournament-host Georgia Southern won the team and individual titles. UAB finished eight strokes behind the host squad, while Georgia Southern junior Scott Wolfes took home individual medalist honors after firing a 209 (-7) at the par-72, 6,947-yard course.
“Georgia Southern had a spectacular week,” added Murray. “It was a home week for Georgia Southern. I was really proud of our guys, they tried really hard. We did a lot of things well.”
Sophomore Martin Rohwer placed second, matching his best finish of the 2013-14 season. Rohwer recorded a five-under par at the Forest Heights Country Club. It marked his best 54-hole score relative to par this year.
Senior Wilson McDonald tallied his fifth top-10 finish of the campaign with a 10th place finish on Sunday. McDonald shot a 215 (-1) in Statesboro, Ga.
Junior Paul Dunne registered a 218 (+2) en route to a 22nd-place finish. Redshirt senior Thomas Sutton was four-over par for the three-day event, placing 29th.
Completing the UAB lineup was senior Sam Love. Love shot a 225 (+9) in the squad’s fourth event of the spring season.
Sophomore Will Cannon, competing as an individual, recorded a 227 (+11) in his third tournament of the 2013-14 campaign.
UAB will be back in action at the Stanford U.S. Intercollegiate. Play begins on Friday, March 28 in Palo Alto, Calif.
