STATESBORO, Ga. ----- Thomas Sutton carded a one-under par 71 to lead the UAB men's golf team to a score of 292 (+4) on day one of the Schenkel Invitational hosted by Georgia Southern.
As a team, the Blazers sit in a tie for 5th place after day one of the three day, 54-hole tournament. Texas leads the tournament with a team score of eight-under pay 280 with Alabama (282) and Florida (285) rounding out the top three.
"I'm relatively pleased with how we played today. There are a lot of good teams in this tournament but I feel like if we make go out tomorrow and make some putts, that we've got a good chance of moving up the leaderboard," said UAB assistant coach Alan Murray.
Sutton got off to a blistering start, going out with a three-under par 33 on his opening nine. He finished with two bogeys and seven pars coming in to finish at one-under par and in a tie for 13th place individually.
Wilson McDonald also played well on the front nine, making two birdies and one bogey en route to a one-under par 35. He finished with a pair of bogeys on the back nine to card an opening round 73 (+1).
Paul Dunne and Hunter Hawkins each shots rounds of two-over par 74 while Martin Rohwer finished a stroke behind them with a 75 (+3) to round out the Blazers team scoring. Sam Love, who is playing as an individual, carded a 76 (+4) to begin the tournament.
Alabama's Justin Thomas sits on top of the individual leaderboard after a five-under par 67 first round score. Four players are tied for second place at four-under par.
Saturday's second round will begin at 9 a.m. ET. Live scoring will be available at golfstat.com.
