HOOVER, Ala. – Junior Paul Dunne took home individual medalist honors for the second time in the 2013-14 season as the UAB men’s golf team finished in second place at the Samford Intercollegiate on Tuesday afternoon. UAB registered a 893 (+29) for the three-round event at the Hoover Country Club.
“We just didn’t play good today, to be honest,” said head coach Alan Murray. “Paul and Thomas played well, but collectively we made too many mistakes. We didn’t deserve to win really. Credit to South Alabama, we were 16 shots ahead of them and they came back beat us.”
The No. 9 UAB men’s golf team owned a 16-stroke advantage after the first round of play. South Alabama rallied over the final two rounds for a two-stroke victory over the Blazers.
“A fantastic tournament for him,” Murray said of Dunne. “He handled himself really well. He is very patient. He is so competitive. At times, he can get too hot. But he handled it really well. He just keeps getting better all of the time.”
Dunne finished at even-par for the three-round tournament at the par-72, 7,001-yard course. The Greystones, Ireland native capped off his second win with a final round 71 (-1).
Redshirt senior Thomas Sutton tied for second place, his best finish of the 2013-14 season. Sutton recorded a 221 (+5) for the event.
Sophomore Martin Rohwer earned his fourth top-20 finish of the year with a 12th place finish. Rohwer recorded a 226 (+10) for the Samford Intercollegiate.
Senior Sam Love placed 25th after shooting a 230 (+14). Redshirt sophomore Ryan Davies completed the lineup with a 248 (+32).
The UAB men’s golf team is back in action on March 14 at the Chris Schenkel Invitational in Statesboro, Ga.
