HOOVER, Ala. –
The No. 9 UAB men’s golf team is in first place after the first round of play at the Samford Intercollegiate on Monday. The squad recorded a 290 (+2) for the opening 18 holes at the Hoover Country Club.

“The boys played great,” head coach Alan Murray said. “Paul’s score was phenomenal and Thomas played excellent. Overall, it was a great team effort.”

Due to pace of play, the format of the tournament was slightly altered. Originally, two rounds were scheduled for Monday and the third and final round would be played on Tuesday. Now, the 16-team field is playing 27 holes on Monday and the final 27 on Tuesday.

“It was absolutely freezing out there,” added Murray. “Conditions were tough. For there being no severe rain or wind, it was some of the toughest conditions I have ever seen. I am proud of their effort and how they handled the adversity.”

Heading into the final day of competition at the par-72, 7,001-yard course, UAB holds a 16-stroke advantage over second-place South Alabama. In addition, three Blazers own three of the top four spots on the individual leaderboard.

Junior Paul Dunne is on top of the individual leaderboard after the first 18 rounds of play. Dunne recorded a 69 (-3) for the first round and owns a two-stroke advantage over the field. The Greystones, Ireland native has been at or under par in four of his last five rounds.

Redshirt senior Thomas Sutton is not too far back of Dunne after firing a 71 (-1) for the first round. Sutton is in second place heading into the final day of action. The redshirt senior is coming off an eighth-place finish at the John Hayt Collegiate Invitational.

Sophomore Martin Rohwer is tied for fourth place after registering a two-over par. This marked Rohwer’s first event back in the lineup after missing the Blazers’ last tournament.

Senior Sam Love is in 12th place after registering a 76 (+4) for the first 18 holes. Redshirt sophomore Ryan Davies, in his first tournament as a member of the Blazers’ lineup in 2013-14, tallied an 85 (+13) on Monday.

The Blazers will head back out on Tuesday morning as they compete in the final day of competition at the Samford Intercolllegiate.
