PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. ----- The UAB men’s golf team finished in a tie for 11th place at the John Hayt Collegiate Invitational after the final round was cancelled on Tuesday due to excessive water on the course.
The Blazers shot a team score of 592 (+16) on the first two days of the tournament and were just seven strokes behind third place UCF going into the final round.
This was the first time in the 22-year history of the event that all three scheduled rounds were not completed.
Thomas Sutton, who was playing as an individual, finished at even par for the tournament and in a tie for 12th place after rounds of 70 (-2) and 74 (+2).
Paul Dunne and Wilson McDonald each finished the tournament at two-over-par. Sam Love shot back-to-back rounds of 74 to finish at four-over-par. Hunter Hawkins (+8) and Martin Rohwer (+14) rounded out the scoring for the Blazers.
Tournament host, the University of North Florida, made a clean sweep of the honors. The Ospreys won the team competition with a 36-hole total of 559, matching both single round and 36-hole marks.
North Florida’s Kevin Phelan took medalist honors, finishing at 13-under-par. His opening round of 64 and 36-hole score were all-time tournament bests. Fellow UNF golfer, Sean Dale took second place at nine-under-par.
UAB will next be in action at the Schenkel Invitational in Statesboro, Ga. on March 15-17.
