PONTE VEDRA, Fla. ----- Paul Dunne and Thomas Sutton each shot rounds of two-under-par 70 to begin the John Hayt Collegiate in a tie for 10th place. As a team, UAB sits in a tie for sixth place after an opening round score of 292 (+4).
Paul Dunne and Thomas Sutton led the way in the first round for the Blazers, each firing rounds of two-under-par 70. Dunne got off to a quick start for the tournament, posting a 31 (-5) on his first nine holes. But he struggled down the stretch, making two bogeys and a double bogey over his final six holes.
Sutton, who is playing as an individual in the tournament, strung together three-straight birdies to make the turn at three-under-par. He traded a pair of birdies and bogeys in his final five holes to finish at two-under-par.
Wilson McDonald also had a solid performance on day one, carding an even-par round of 72. Sam Love shot an even-par 36 on the back nine to finish with a score of 74 (+2). Hunter Hawkins rebounded from a triple bogey on his 14th hole by going one-under over his final four holes to finish with a 76 (+4). Martin Rohwer rounded out the scoring for UAB with a opening round 77 (+5).
North Florida leads the team standings after day one with a total of 276. Duke and UCF round out the top three with totals of 282 and 286, respectively.
North Florida’s Kevin Phelan fired a first round score of eight-under-par 64 to lead all individuals. A pair of North Florida golfers and one from UCF and Coastal Carolina are tied for second place at four-under-par.
Second round play will begin at 8 a.m. ET on Monday. The Blazers will be starting off of hole number one and will be playing with golfers from Florida and Arkansas.
