PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – The first round of the John Hayt Collegiate Invitational could not be completed on Sunday, as scheduled, due to inclement weather. The UAB men’s golf team is currently four-over par and in seventh place midway through its first round of play at the par-72, 6,966-yard course.
“The John Hayt Collegiate Invitational is a great tournament,” head coach Alan Murray stated. “You never know with Mother Nature. There is nothing you can do.”
Play was suspended in the afternoon due to inclement weather in the Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. area. Three hours later, play resumed. Two hours after, play was halted for the day due to darkness.
Sophomore Will Cannon completed the most holes on the day, recording a five-over par through 11 holes. On the other end, senior Wilson McDonald is eight-over par through seven holes.
“It was a long day just for nine holes,” added Murray. “It was very mentally draining on the boys. Hopefully, the weather is kind to us tomorrow.”
Senior Sam Love sits on top of the individual leaderboard through nine holes. Love recorded four birdies in his first nine holes. Love owns a one-stroke advantage heading into the back nine.
Junior Paul Dunne is one-over par through nine holes. Dunne is currently tied for 21st place. Redshirt senior Thomas Sutton is one stroke back of Dunne and in a tie for 36th place.
Playing as an individual, redshirt sophomore Ryan Davies is five-over par through nine holes.
The first round of play will resume at 7:20 a.m. CT. The second round will begin following the completion of the first 18 holes.
