BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ---- Hunter Mullins, UAB's career and season record holder in punting average, was named to the 2013 Conference USA first team, the league office announced Tuesday.
The Blazers' Jamarcus Nelson was tabbed to the league's second team as a wide receiver after catching a team-high 42 passes for 846 yards and eight touchdowns.
Running back Jordan Howard was selected to the C-USA All-Freshman Team after gaining 881 yards and averaging 6.1 yards per attempt. Howard ranked second nationally among FBS freshmen in rushing yards.
Every C-USA school was represented on the all-conference squads, voted by the league's 14 head coaches. Overall, UAB had 11 players named to various conference honors Tuesday.
Mullins, a junior, led all Conference USA punters this season in average at 43.1 yards per kick. The Tallassee, Ala. native is UAB's career leader at 43.95 and a set a season mark for the Blazers in 2012 with his 44.8 yards average. Mullins had 51 punts for a 43.1 yards average and recorded 14 kicks inside 20 yards. He had a season-long punt of 63 yards.
Nelson, also a junior, was one of the league's most dynamic players in 2013 as he averaged 20.1 yards per reception. The junior from Birmingham is the UAB record holder for yards per reception in his career at 19.98 yards per catch.
Nelson also registered the top two all-purpose yard totals in Conference USA during the season, and the second-best nationally in 2013. He accounted for 367 all-purpose yards in the season opener against Troy and finished the season with a 303-yard performance against Southern Miss.
The Blazers had eight players who received C-USA honorable mention accolades. Howard and fellow running back Darrin Reaves, who rushed for 928 yards and 12 touchdowns, along with offensive tackle Kaycee Ike and tight end Kennard Backman (28 catches/302 yards/2 TDs), were tabbed to the honorable mention offensive squad.
Ganus, a sophomore from Chelsea, Ala., concluded the 2013 season with a team-best 93 tackles with eight tackles for loss -- best on the team - with an interception and a pass breakup.
Also named honorable mention were kicker Ty Long (16-of-24 FGs, 84 points) and Nelson, who earned the honor as a return specialist. Nelson averaged 22.7 yards on 27 kick returns and 11.0 yards on eight punt returns. He returned one kickoff and one punt return for touchdowns during the season.
