BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ---- UAB head football coach Garrick McGee spent time previewing Saturday's matchup with Southern Miss during Monday's media luncheon in the Green and Gold Room at Bartow Arena.

UAB and Southern Miss kick off at Noon CST Saturday at Legion Field in the final game of the 2013 season.

Below are comments from McGee, senior quarterback Jonathan Perry and senior offensive lineman Billy Autrey.

Head Coach Garrick McGee

On junior OL John Hix...
"I've talked to him a few times. He seemed to be in good spirits. He's in some pain, of course. He's at home with his family. It's a really good thing his family was in town at the game. He's a really unselfish kid."

On losing a close game against Rice...
"Those are the hard losses for me, especially when it feels like we didn't execute and do the little things right. If we continue to develop, we are going to find ourselves in those games that come down to the last seconds."

On Southern Miss freshman QB Nick Mullens...
"He's doing a good job. He's giving them life and some production. There is a lot for a true freshman to deal with on a Division I game field. We all know that he is a very accurate passer. He's really good at mid-range passing. I think he's provided a spark for them."

On rivalry with Southern Miss...
"It's definitely a rivalry. Last year, I didn't quite know because I hadn't been through the process of the game. At this point, we're not hiding. This is a rivalry. We are totally committed to the war that it's going to be. I am going to be charged up personally and I think our kids will be charged up as well."

On winning the final game...
"It means a lot for us and for every team playing football. You want to win the last game and go into the offseason with momentum. It means a lot to every program."

On if Southern Miss' record affects preparation...
"It doesn't mean anything to me. I am worried about this game. Every game is different. Just two years ago, they were the conference champions. We are going to prepare. When the ball is kicked off, nobody knows or cares about the records."

Senior QB Jonathan Perry

On playing his last game...
"It's pretty tough. But we knew that coming out of high school. You get four years in high school and you get to play four in college. You have to make the most of it."

On taking pride in never losing to Southern Miss...
"We haven't lost to these guys since I've been here. We take a tremendous amount of pride in that. We just want to continue that and go out on a great note."

On losing a close game like the one against Rice...
"That's one of the toughest ways to lose, when you will your way back into a game. There are so many emotions throughout the game. We definitely wanted to win."

On reflecting on his time at UAB...
"I've learned a lot from the older guys. I just go out there and play hard. I have grown a lot coming to Birmingham from (Baltimore). I wouldn't change anything about it. It's been the best experience of my life."

Senior OL Billy Autrey

On fellow lineman John Hix after his injury...
"He's doing great. He's back home in Auburn. We went to see him in the hospital multiple times after his injury. He's in good spirits. He wants us to go out there and win this weekend."

On if it's hard to believe his career is ending...
"It's crazy to think that this is probably the last game I'll ever play. I have been an athlete my whole life. Hopefully we go out with a bang."

On importance of winning final game...
"It's very important. I'm going to be a Blazer for life. I am going to bleed and Green and Gold. I want to win and carry some momentum into next season. We have never lost to Southern Miss as a senior class and we want to keep that streak going."
