BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - UAB held its weekly football media luncheon on Monday afternoon, where head coach Watson Brown and four Blazers were in attendance to discuss the upcoming Conference USA contest at Southern Miss on Saturday, November 18. Kickoff in Hattiesburg, Miss. is scheduled for 7 p.m., with live national television broadcast by CSTV.
UAB Head Coach Watson Brown
On the 80 pass play that broke the game open when the score was 22-17 against UTEP last weekend:
"We held them; got the ball at their 45 yard line and we just could not do anything with it. That was our first blown opportunity. Then we have them at third and eight, and allow them to get a big play and score. We have been close these past four weeks, but that does not really matter."
On the amount of injuries this year:
"It has been someone different each week. The seniors have all been beat up and it has been really hard on the leadership. They have done a great job and really have worked hard. Consistency is the only way that you are going to win in this league, and we have not been consistent at all this year."
On the upcoming game against Southern Miss:
"We want to win this game, we have never beaten them. They have been the best team in this league. Southern Miss is always playing for the championship and they have a great program. We always catch them at their best because this game is a rivalry. We are going to have to play very well to win."
On how he has held up this year:
"It has been a very tough year. I think it has been one of the toughest that I have ever had as a coach. I have had to deal with something every week. Whether it's who is going to play each week, having to make a game plan for who is playing, and losing four in a row. That is hard on everybody."
Senior Chris Felder (DB)
On the loss to UTEP:
"We've got to put the game in the past and come back and play hard."
On not being bowl eligible:
"We still have to play hard and stay focused."
On playing Southern Miss:
"The other day in our meetings, the seniors were talking about how we've never beat them. So that's what we want to do."
On playing spoiler:
"Hopefully it will be like the ECU game."
Junior Sam Hunt (QB)
On being back on the field against UTEP:
"It took a couple plays to get back into it but we went hard in practice so it's easy to jump right back in there."
On the fourth quarter against UTEP:
"A couple of big plays by UTEP on offense and defense kind of swung the momentum."
On the state of the team:
"I don't think it will be hard to keep everyone motivated. We still have Southern Miss and UCF left so we want to finish strong for the seniors."
On playing last two at home:
"We played half our games at home and half on the road and we've won both at home and the road so it shouldn't be a problem playing the last two away."
On taking over the team leader role:
"I think all the guys that will be back next year need to start now and finish the year strong and just keep getting better."
Senior Jermaine McElveen (DE)
On what the team has its sights set on:
"Our goal right now is to beat Southern Miss. We've got something to play for; we've got to beat Southern Miss."
On the team sticking together:
"We've stayed together through thick and thin, we're still a team, we're brothers."
