UAB Football's Gallego Nominated For Lou Groza Award

BIRMINGHAM - UAB's Rhett Gallego was among the 20 players placed on the ballot Monday for the Ninth Annual Lou Groza Award, honoring the nation's top collegiate placekicker.

The award, which is named in honor of Lou "The Toe" Groza, an original Cleveland Brown, a Pro Football Hall-of-Famer, and one of the game's greatest placekickers, will be presented by the FedEx Orange Bowl committee on Tuesday, Dec. 5.

Gallego, a junior from Birmingham (Hueytown HS) is 14-16 on field goal attempts this season (21-24 career), and has hit game-winners vs. both LSU (Sep. 23) and East Carolina (Oct. 28). He has been named Conference USA Special Teams Player of The Week three times this season. Gallego is also very steady on PATs, having made 17 of 18 attempts this season (36-39 career).

Former winners of the Lou Groza Award include Florida State's Sebastian Janikowski and Martin Grammatica of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
