Oct. 30, 2000

BIRMINGHAM - UAB placekicker Rhett Gallego has been named Conference USA Special Teams Player of The Week after making three field goals including the game-winner in UAB's 16-13 victory at East Carolina last Saturday.

The junior from Birmingham (Hueytown HS) also received the honor following his game-winning field goal in the final seconds of the LSU game (Sep. 23) and after kicking a school-record four field goals in the Blazers' win over Louisiana-Lafayette (Sep. 30).

In the ECU game, Gallego missed his first attempt from 45 yards, but came back to make field goals of 38 and 31 yards in the second quarter and then hit a pressure-packed 43-yarder with 2:24 left to play that proved to be the difference as UAB escaped with the win.

Gallego has had an outstanding season thus far, making 14-16 field goal attempts and 14 of 15 PATs. In the NCAA Division I-A statistics released on Oct. 29, he was rankd fourth in field goals made at 1.75 per game).
