Oct. 2, 2000

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- UAB placekicker Rhett Gallego has earned Conference USA Special Teams Player of The Week honors for the second consecutive week, the league office announced Monday.

Gallego (pronounced guh-LEG-oh) kicked a school-record four field goals -- including a career-long 47-yarder -- and made four of five PATs in the Blazers' 47-2 victory over Louisiana-Lafayette Saturday (Sep. 30) at Legion Field. He is currently 8-8 on field goal attempts this season (15-16 for his career) and is tied for third nationally in field goals (2.0 per game) and tied for 42nd in scoring (8.0 points per game).

Gallego's streak of 24 consecutive PATs -- which dated back to the 1998 season -- came to an end when Lousiana-Lafayette blocked one, but he is still 8-9 this season and 27-30 (.900) for his UAB career (1998- ).

A junior from Birmingham (Hueytown HS), Gallego shared the honor with Tulane punter Casey Roussel on Sep. 25 after kicking the winning field goal in the Blazers' 13-10 upset of LSU in Baton Rouge.
