BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ---- The UAB football team practiced in shorts and shells for roughly two hours on Tuesday afternoon, preparing for its Conference USA opener against Tulsa on Saturday.  The game is scheduled for 2 p.m. CT at Legion Field.

Saturday’s game will air locally on WUHT-FM 107.7 with David Crane (pxp), John Whitcomb (analyst) and Sam Miller (sidelines) on the call.

Following practice, head coach Garrick McGee spoke to the media.  McGee touched on how he was impressed with the team zeroing in on the Tulsa game plan.

“Today went really well,” McGee said.  “Our kids are focused and doing what they have to do to be prepared for the game.”

UAB (0-3, 0-0 C-USA) will take on a Tulsa (3-1, 1-0 C-USA) team that is coming off a 27-26 victory over Fresno State last weekend.

The Blazers dropped their last contest, falling to then-No. 16 Ohio State on the road, 29-15.  Despite the loss, UAB held the edge in total offense, 403 to 347, and in time of possession, 33:55 to 26:05.

Entering the fourth game of the season, McGee has also been pleased with the improvement of the overall team depth.

“I think we are a deep team because we have played so many young guys in the last three weeks,” McGee said.  “Everybody gets reps at practice and after practice are young guys stay after and get extra work.  When you are trying to build a program, you are always trying to develop your depth.”
