Sept. 4, 2009
Dear Blazer fans,
Finally. Yes, it was nice to have football games on Thursday and Friday. No, it's not the same when it's not ''your'' team. So, when we wake up on Saturday morning (let's hope to no rain), feel free to let out a little shout...have an especially good stretch...pour yourself an extra cup of coffee...because life is good. The season has arrived, and now we get to enjoy it!
After a long off-season and a productive pre-season, it's time to see what the 2009 Blazers will look like. All indications are that this team will indeed be better. The numbers are up. The talent level is up. In talking to the players, the excitement level is up. I realize every team is excited this week, but I do get a sense that these guys are really tired of not winning as much as they would like. They have all worked extremely hard preparing for this season, and today's game in particular. I don't think you can judge an entire season based on the season-opener, but I do think you can get a read on a team. Things can change over the course of 12 games...I don't think South Carolina's offense will be that bad AGAIN this year...I don't think Oregon's offense will be that punchless (couldn't resist) all season...and I don't think you can definitely say what UAB will "be" in 2009 based on today's outing at Legion Field. I do, however, think there is a real reason to be excited about this season, regardless of today's outcome against Rice (apparently others do, as well, since the Green and Gold are favored!).
It's been a fun week leading up to kick-off. We had a great turnout Wednesday night at Baumhower's Wings Restaurant in Patton Creek for the call-in show. We hope that will continue all season long, especially the student representation. We'll be giving away gift cards from Wings the rest of the year, so students, come on out! I mean, really, what student in history has ever turned down the chance at a free meal?
Another fun experience came Friday at the Hill Center. Around lunchtime, coach Callaway headed over to the food court to mix and mingle with the students. It was great to see a lot of green and gold, and I hope all those that said they would be at Legion Field will keep their promise. Be on the lookout for coach Callaway all over campus...you never know where you may see him next.
Have a great Saturday...and Labor Day...enjoy ALL the football action.
See you at Legion Field.
