BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --- The UAB football team spent Tuesday afternoon's practice in full pads for roughly two hours in preparation for Saturday's season-opener at Troy.
The Blazers and Trojans are scheduled to kick off at 6 p.m. CT at Troy's Veterans Memorial Stadium. The matchup will be carried on ESPN3.com with Dave Weekley (play-by-play) and Cole Cubelic (analyst) on the call. David Crane (play-by-play), Steve Irvine (analyst) and Sam Miller (sideline reporter) will also broadcast the game on the Blazer IMG Sports Network. The contest will air locally on WUHT-FM 107.7.
Following Tuesday's practice, UAB offensive coordinator Richard Owens spoke with media members. Owens knows the challenges that come with the first game of the season but feels like his unit will be ready for Saturday's clash with the Trojans.
"We have to make sure that players are ready to play," Owens said. "We want to make sure they are comfortable with what we are doing on offense, they are comfortable with the scheme and are ready to go out and compete when it is game time."
Owens also discussed Troy's defense following Tuesday's workout. According to Owens, the Trojans play with great effort and will present some challenges for the Blazers.
"They play hard," Owens said. "They play extremely hard. They are fundamentally sound in what they do. They move to the ball and play with a good motor. They are a really good football team."
Saturday's game will mark the 11th all-time meeting between the two schools, with two of the last three contests being decided by one point. Troy leads the all-time series, 6-4.
