BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – With only 10 days until the season opener at Troy, preseason camp is beginning to come to a close for the UAB football team. On Wednesday morning, the Blazers practiced for just over two hours at the UAB Football Practice Facility in their first of two training sessions.
Following the morning practice, defensive coordinator Reggie Johnson, senior defensive tackle Deric Scott and sophomore linebacker Jake Ganus spoke with the media. Each one discussed how the team is doing as it nears the end of camp and heads into the 2013 regular season.
“The biggest thing is getting the guys to understand that everybody in the country is tired,” Johnson explained. “They are physically beat up. You don’t feel good right about now, but you still have to force yourself to come and work, be locked in mentally, and push yourself through it.”
The Green and Gold have been in preseason camp for over two weeks now. The team’s matchup with in-state foe Troy is no longer a distant sight; its bout with the Trojans will be a reality in only a few days.
“At this point, it is just a mental thing,” Scott added. “Being able to still function when you are tired, line up and execute your assignment when you are tired.”
“It has been the same routine over and over again, but we are pushing through it,” Ganus commented. “We know that game week is next week. We know we have to get better everyday because we know Troy and all of our opponents are. We are just going to keep working like we have been and push through.”
The UAB football team will return to the practice field later in the day Wednesday.
Blazer fans will be able to kick off the 2013 season in fun fashion Saturday, Aug. 24 when the annual Football Fan Day is held at The Outlet Shops of Grand River. The event will be held from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. at the main entrance near the food court.
