BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB football team worked out for just over two hours Tuesday morning as the Blazers continue preparations for the Aug. 30 season opener against Troy.
Head coach Bill Clark emphasized that the team's position battles are ongoing and players are continuing to challenge for spots on the depth chart, but the coaching staff is beginning to get an idea of where players will be.
"I think we have a read on it," Clark said. "Someone comes out with the first team and someone comes out with the second team and that is what we base it on. Sometimes you wish you had a clear-cut winner too, but at the same time I think we have some solid guys at all positions. We have some guys that run out with the first group and we have some guys that are right on their heals."
The Blazers will begin turning their focus to some game situations this week, with the opener against Troy less than two weeks away. Clark knows how important this game is; however, he feels that the team must remain focused on continuing to get better.
"I think we do some game situations this week," Clark remarked. "You want to keep some speed of the game and that is where you get to go against each other. I am not going to go tell the defense that they have to get in a look just for the offense and the offense for the defense. It is kind of a split deal."
"It is almost like what you do for an open day. This game is going to be very important for them and it is very important for us, but it is not our whole season. We have to keep getting better, especially for us being new. We want to be a better team week two than we were in week one, yet be ready for the first one so you have to have a mixture."
UAB kicks off the 2014 season against Troy on Aug. 30 at home. Game time is set for 11 a.m. CT at Legion Field. Ticket information for UAB's six home games can be found at www.UABsports.com or by calling the UAB ticket office at 205-975-8221.
