BIRMINGHAM, Ala.--The UAB football team worked out in full pads Tuesday morning as fall camp continued on the UAB practice fields.

Both the offensive and defensive units spent much of the practice applying lessons learned in last Saturday's scrimmage.

"Our guys got a first taste of as close to action that they can get," offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Jeff Brohm said. "I think the effort was there. We struggled at quarterback at times, the loudness of it, the rush affected some of our decisions, but it's good to happen now. We're going to try to get in as many different settings as possible where they can simulate the game speed. We're going to pick up and push through."

On the defensive side, defensive coordinator and linebackers coach Reggie Johnson was pleased with the effort against the passing game.

"There is still work to be done on the little things," Johnson said. "The fundamentals. It's an on-going process, but there's been growth, and I'm pleased with the guys up front. I think they played extremely hard, but something we have to do better as a defense is stopping the run game. We have to stop the run, and that starts with doing the little things right."

The defense was successful in making plays during the scrimmage, especially forcing turnovers, another of Johnson's main points of emphasis during the fall camp.

"If you can win the turnover battle, the percentages say that you have a good chance of winning games, so our focus is to create turnovers whether it's forcing fumbles or getting interceptions," Johnson said. "We definitely have some guys we think can produce and with that, we can have a special season."

With the beginning of the fall semester Wednesday, the Blazers will take a short break from practice before returning to the field on Friday.

UAB begins the 2012 season on Saturday, Sept. 1 hosting in-state foe Troy at Legion Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 11 a.m. and Fox College Sports will broadcast the game.
