BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- The UAB football team donned full pads for the first time in preseason camp Saturday morning as the Blazers continue working toward their 2013 season opener at Troy, now three weeks away.
The Blazers spent just over two hours on their campus practice fields on their fifth practice day since camp opened on Tuesday.
UAB offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach Richard Owenssaid the first session in full gear went well.
"It was really good," Owens said. "I thought the guys got after it. We seemed to get better today, really just trying to improve on our fundamentals."
With the team putting the full pads on, Owens said it's easier for the coaching staff to evaluate certain areas of performance than without pads.
"Things do pick up (with pads on) and obviously, the running game offensively starts to develop and we start to grow as a team," said Owens. "Some of the depth up front and the physicality on the edge in the perimeter, you really get a live look at it. You get to see who's going to step up and who's going to compete."
The Blazers, who open the 2013 season on Aug. 31 at Troy (6:00 p.m. CT), will take Sunday off away from the field before returning to practice Monday morning.
