UAB Football Fall Camp Adds Shells

Aug. 8, 2013

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- The UAB football team completed its third day of practice Thursday afternoon at Legion Field. The Blazers turned the intensity up a notch, donning shells (helmets and shoulder pads) for the first time this fall.

After the nearly two-and-a-half hour practice, head coach Garrick McGee and assistant head coach/inside linebacker coach Jimmy Williams addressed the media.

“Today was the first day we had shoulder pads on so there were some of the setbacks that go along with that,” said McGee. “Our conference is a fast-breaking conference, so most of our practice was fast break, as fast as we could do it, trying to challenge our kids to function at a fast pace when they are tired.”

For some of the freshmen, it was a big change from their high school practices last fall.

“It’s a little more running and a little more intense from high school and everyone on the field is a good player,” McGee said. “Out here everybody was the best high school player on the team, that’s how it is in college.”

Despite the increase in speed and intensity, Williams was encouraged by the effort and fundamentals the players were committed to.

“What I do like is that we have a great attitude from our group,” said Williams. “They are giving great effort to learn and get better in terms of technique and fundamentals which early on, that is what you want to see, an effort to get better.”

The Blazers will return to the practice field on Friday afternoon.
