BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ---- Official reporting day is Monday for the UAB football team as head coach Garrick McGee opens his 2013 fall camp -- his second with the Blazers -- with the first practice Tuesday afternoon on the campus practice fields.
The Blazers will practice for nearly three weeks before moving into their game-week preparations for the 2013 season opener at Troy on Aug. 31 (6:30 p.m. CT).
UAB returns eight starters on offense, eight on defense and both specialists from the 2012 squad.
The Blazer offense is expected to again be an explosive unit this fall. A pair of experienced quarterbacks -- sophomore Austin Brown and senior Jonathan Perry -- combined for 3,706 passing yards and 21 touchdown passes last season and return for 2013.
In addition, UAB will feature an outstanding running game, headlined by first-team All-Conference USA junior Darrin Reaves. Reaves, listed on the Doak Walker Award Watch List last month, rushed for 1,037 yards and 13 touchdowns in 2012. Senior Jackie Williams leads a receiving corps after his 52-catch/799-yards effort last year.
Defensively, the Blazers have 28 returning letterwinners but will face a void created by the departure of linebacker Marvin Burdette, the top tackler in the country last season (157 tackles). Senior safety Calvin Jones is the leading returnee among tacklers with 71 last season.
UAB will play its 2013 home opener on Saturday, Sept. 21 when Northwestern (La.) State visits Legion Field for a 2:00 p.m. CT kickoff.
Ticket information for 2013 home games can be found on www.uabsports.com or by calling the UAB ticket office at 205-975-8221.
