BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- Former UAB defensive end Bryant Turner spent a lot of time in the opposing team's backfield during his playing career with the Blazers. Now, he's doing the same thing in the Canadian Football League.

Turner, in his third season with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, on Tuesday was named the CFL Defensive Player-of-the-Week. Turner, a native of Daphne, Ala., led the Bombers' defense in last weekend's 19-11 Week 2 victory over the Montreal Alouettes. He had five tackles, including three sacks, and forced a fumble in the Winnipeg win.

Turner played at UAB from 2007-10 and ranks No. 7 all-time for the Blazers in sacks with 18. He had seven sacks his senior season. Turner is No. 4 on the school's all-time charts in tackles for loss with 18.

Turner was a CFL All-Star last season for Winnipeg.
