BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --- Quarterback Jonathan Perry threw for 250 yards and three touchdowns Saturday afternoon as the White team downed the Green squad, 38-27, in the UAB Football Spring Game.
Fans came out in full force to West Campus Field as UAB Athletics commemorated the two-year anniversary of the Alabama tornadoes that swept across the state on April 27, 2011. James Spann, meteorologist for ABC 33/40, and Walt Maddox, Mayor of Tuscaloosa and former UAB football player, served as guest coaches for the event.
"We had a lot of fans out and it was a really good day for our program," head coach Garrick McGee said. "To see all the events we had out there -- the sorority girls playing at halftime, the guest coaches, our President Dr. Ray Watts and our Athletics Director Brian Mackin out there -- it was a fun day."
Running back Greg Franklin teamed with Perry to lead the White team as he rushed for 92 yards on 17 attempts and caught four passes for 36 yards. The Marietta, Ga., native also rushed for one touchdown and had two TD receptions on the day.
For the Green team, quarterback Austin Brown completed 17-for-26 passes and had one touchdown, while running back Darrin Reaves finished with 96 yards on the ground with two touchdown runs.
"I thought our quarterback play was efficient today," McGee added. "For the most part, they understand what we are doing now. They understand how to control the ball, how to make pressure checks and run game checks -- things that you don't see out there when you are watching from the stands.
"Our running backs did well today. We have an all-conference running back in Reaves and a guy that could start anywhere in Franklin along with a Bashr Coles, who is also playing well. So, it is a really good problem for us to have right now."
Defensively, safety and White team member Calvin Jones led all Blazers on the day with 10 tackles, while Green squad linebacker Daniel White recorded five tackles, including two sacks and one interception, which was returned 38 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter.
Defensive end Chris Rabb also had a strong day for the Blazers, recording five tackles, two sacks and one tackle for loss on the White team. Meanwhile, cornerback Kelton Brackett, safety Shalin Waterford, linebacker Jake Ganus and cornerback Devon Brown each finished with seven tackles.
"Defensively, we haven't changed our scheme, we have just kind of manipulated our scheme," McGee said. "We want to be faster and have guys in better position. We want to limit one-one-one situations, so now we are set up to where everybody is joined at the hip and together. I think we have more explosive players on the field, and you saw that today."
UAB concludes spring practice with Saturday's event. The Blazers open the season on Aug. 31 at Troy.
