Football Set For First Scrimmage

April 6, 2001

BLAZERS SET FOR SCRIMMAGE:? After practices on Thursday and Friday that head coach Watson Brown termed "extremely physical," the UAB Blazers will hold their first full-fledged scrimmage on Monday (Apr. 9) at 3:00 pm.??

"Scrimmages in the spring are more of an individual thing for me," said Brown.?

"I'm looking for people who can show me something, who can make plays, who can show consistency.?? It is important from a team standpoint to work on things in as close to game conditions as you can get, but spring is really a time for the individual player to show what he can do. There will be a lot of situational stuff. We're not really concerned so much about yards or who scored a touchdown, that kind of thing."

Monday's scrimmage will have a tightly controlled format, with each unit playing a maximum of five consecutive plays, no hits allowed on the quarterbacks and quick whistles in general.??

"We will know a lot more about what we've accomplished after Monday," said Brown.

INJURIES:? Players who will not participate in Monday's scrimmage include defensive lineman Eddie Freeman (toe), offensive linemen Preston Fray (shoulder) and Artavious Williams (hamstring) - all of whom are wearing red jerseys as they continue to recuperate from off season surgery.? Others who are unlikely to see action include receivers? Maurice Gallery (knee) and T.J. Simmons (knee), running back Jegil Dugger (shoulder), safety Torrey Hale (shoulder), and offensive lineman Eddie LaFavour (back).

STRANGE METEOROLOGICAL PHENOMENON: ?After losing Tuesday and Wednesday's workouts to rain, Friday's UAB practice took place in sunshine, with a relatively dry field and temperatures in the 70s.?

ABRAMS SUSPENDED: Brown has suspended senior linebacker Adrian Abrams for the entire spring practice period, for unspecified violation of team rules.? The senior from Theodore, Ala., will have his status reevaluated some time prior to the start of fall practice.
